This is a well-known fact: the heart plays a vital role in the body. The function of the heart is to circulate the blood and provide oxygen and essential nutrients to each cell of the body, and remove waste products. If the heart has difficulty pumping blood, it will not be able to deliver oxygen-rich blood to the body, and a person can have a heart attack.
When the Stent Placement is required
Doctor recommend for a heart stent when a person gets a heart attack due to blocked arteries. There are situations when the heart stops working properly, preventing the flow of blood. To treat such damage, an angioplasty procedure is required, where stents are used to open the blocked arteries. There are types of stents, of which drug-eluting stents are commonly used for treatment.
What is the Angioplasty procedure?
Angioplasty is a procedure (also known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)) that is done to open blocked arteries to restore blood flow without performing a bypass surgery or an open heart surgery. During an angioplasty procedure, a long, thin tube is put in the blood vessels with a balloon on a stent, which is a tiny, expandable metal mesh coil. After placing the stent, the balloon is removed from the place and the stent remains inside the arteries to open them wide, so that the blood starts flowing again.
Does a stent prevent Future heart attacks?
If you think that once the stents are placed, there will not be an issue of a heart attack again, then this is a myth. People think like this because they do not have full information about the fact.
Stents indeed help to treat current damage to the heart, but they cannot prevent to block othere arteries in the heart. Hence, a heart attack can still occur a second time.
